Dirty Little Secrets – Yeoman Rowena Lee
Genre: SFR
Title: Bodies in Motion (debut in June)

Dirty secrets? Yeah, I know a few. I have the hottest gossip in the fleet, and – no – I won’t tell you how I got any of it. If you want what I’ve got: pay up.

But, since I like you, I’ll tell you something people don’t know. I admit, I have a reputation. Even before the war I was considered a little dangerous. That’s what comes from living on a ship where even your own crew might put a knife in your back. Some people say I have trust issues. It’s not that, I just don’t trust anyone. And it takes a lot to rev my engine.

Before my fall from grace there were people that tried. The old fleet stand-bys are warships and ammunition. I have those, or I had them before the war. And after the war I’d lost rank and privileges and wasn’t allowed either. But let’s think back on happier days. Somewhere between the in-fighting on my ship and the war I spent three blissful years terrorizing the halls of the Imperial Academy as an officer candidate.

Picture a morning the week after finals. Most of the cadets had gone to home, or at least to allied ships. I thought I had the gym to myself when he walked in. Six-two and still growing, dark red hair a little longer than regulation allowed, golden eyes, and a smile that said his reputation as a good lover was true. Like I said, the fleet gossips and I hear everything.

He wasn’t my type… no. That’s wrong.

At that point I thought no one was “my type.” If I’d been born with a sex drive, it was out of fuel and needing repairs.

People said I was cold, and maybe that’s true. I don’t enjoy cuddling or caressing. Sugary words never made me want to drop my guard. But when he looked my way and nodded to the mat, I agreed.

Hand-to-hand combat wasn’t my strongest skill – yet. But I enjoyed it. And with Hollis Silar I didn’t have to hold back. I never had to pull my punches. I never had to apologize for what I was.

That morning we fought in silence. No knives, just fists, feet, and fury. It was the first time I won, pinning him to the mat. I could have flown, it was such a rush. Then I looked down, and he smiled, golden eyes glinting… and there was something.

After the war, when everything fell apart, we wound up back on the mats. It was supposed to be a public service, to repay my debt to society, but really I did for me. And for his smile. The times I’m close enough to feel his heartbeat, to see the glint of gold in his eye? That’s my fuel.

One day, he’ll be gone. He’ll find someone worthy of a commander and a war hero. But, today, his smile is mine.
