Character's Dirty Secret for C #atozchallenge

Theme: Characters & Their Dirty Little Secrets.

I hope you enjoy today's entry as we feature another secret for your enjoyment, thrills, chills, and possibly appalling reactions. I tried to keep it under 500 words for each day's entry. Come see what we have in store for you today in a fictional character's own words...

Celly
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Title: Prowlers & Growlers Boxed set
Story: Mated

I’m a phoenix shifter. That’s not my secret, but you need to know that to understand why my secret is and needs to remain a secret. You also need to understand that phoenixes and dragons have a long history of going to war against one another. Phoenixes think dragons are ill-suited to govern the Firelands because they’re impulsive and hot-blooded, and dragons think they belong on the throne because they’re bigger and stronger than phoenixes. It’s been going on forever, and it certainly won’t change any time soon. We’re not at war at the moment, but even if we play nice it doesn’t mean we’re allies, or that a new war won’t start tomorrow.

Now that you’ve got an idea of what my world is like, here’s my secret. Just promise you won’t tell anyone, all right? And especially not my brother.

A few years ago, my family was invited to the king’s castle for some celebration. My mother is the uncrowned ruler of the phoenix clans, so she was a sort of guest of honor. Either that, or the king wanted to remind her of his power. I was too young to really understand it or care, but not so young that I wouldn’t notice how interesting the prince heir is, how charismatic, how intriguing, how handsome... He’s a few years older than me and I doubt he noticed me at all, but I… I noticed him. I did more than notice him. I’ve been thinking about him for years, waiting for an opportunity to see him again. I know nothing could ever come of it. A dragon prince and a phoenix lady? Even if he was interested in me, even if our beasts let us be together, our families never would. Even telling someone about my crush would get me in trouble. But then, why is that little fire of hope still burning inside me?

  1. That's a rough secret to have. Makes me interested in the books though.
