A Thursday Taste

"Give me something stiff." She threw ten coppers down on the bar. Reed would take what he needed and leave the rest. In seconds, a wooden shot glass of dark liquid sat before her.

"Do you wanna know what it is?"

"Do I really care?" Her eyebrow shot up and she knocked back the drink. She swallowed the liquid and it burned going down her throat. A cough threatened to ruin her drinking reputation, and her hand came to her chest.

"Burns, don't it?" a deep voice said beside her.

She nodded and her eyes watered. She turned toward the voice. An elf with long dark braids in his hair and bright green eyes took a stool beside her.

He grinned. "I'll have what she's having, Reed."

"Nice to see you again, Hawthorn." Reed poured the drink and set it in front of the elf.

He tipped the cup up to Cayenne like a salute and downed it. He slammed the cup on the bar and shook his head. "That's the spot. So, you from around here?"

"Nope." She signaled for another.

"Me either. I came in for a job. You?"

"Work." Reed handed her the drink and she shot it down again. This time it slipped down easier than the first since she knew what to expect. She slammed the cup down on the bar like Hawthorn did and gave him a grin. His eyes shone with mischief.

"Only know how to say one word at a time, sweetheart?"

Cayenne let the grin fall from her face and raised an eyebrow. "I'm not your sweetheart."

  8. I thoroughly enjoyed this taster, too. It is artfully crafted, great dialogue, very believable and smooth. I think Cayenne is quite a contending character. I am eager to see how this unfolds <3 xo

  9. Nice crisp writing style. I could learn a lot from that. When I come to redraft I'm always having to prune excess verbiage. You set the story up vividly with a minimum of fuss.
